Active recall is a powerful learning method. In a YouTube video by Shu Omi, he talks about how valuable active recall is to the process of learning for students. I remember my days at University when I was trying to cram a vast sea of detailed material into my head, so I stood a fighting chance of a decent grade when it came to exam time. It was hard work.
When I was a student, nobody taught us how to study effectively. I wish they had. Today, students can find advice on just about any topic by searching Google or YouTube. Shu gave us a 3-step process. He used Notion — a note-taking app for laptops and smartphones.
- Make notes when you read or study, by hand, or electronically
- Draft a list of questions based on what you’ve just learned
- Answer the questions then review your notes.
