Are online lessons the future of learning?

Or is it still too complicated?

As a private maths tutor, I’ve been offering face-to-face lessons to local students for the last 6 years. And it’s been successful. What I offer was in demand…until this year. Most parents don’t want face-to-face lessons anymore. It’s too risky with coronavirus on the loose.

What are the benefits of online lessons?

This what I’ve been doing instead — online audiovisual lessons with zoom, skype, and meet. I’ve tried all three providers. They all have their pros and cons. I tend to use Google meet as it’s more reliable than the others. I also use Microsoft teams when connecting my Windows laptop with a student who is using Apple hardware. Teams works well with Apple.

But as a maths tutor, I needed to replicate doing worked examples. I needed some kind of whiteboard. There are an endless variety of electronic whiteboards available with different features and price points.

The benefits of this form of teaching are many. Both teacher and student don’t need to travel anywhere, they can do it from the comfort of their own homes. There are no distractions. The teacher and student are focused on the lesson. Geography is no longer a limitation. You can teach the world.
