Being in the eye of a storm

It’s a strange time to be alive right now.

It’s like everyone’s life has been becalmed. So many things are now on hold, while a pandemic rages outside our homes. It feels to me we are treading water, waiting for it to be all over, so our lives can return to normal.

But there is a better way to benefit from this time of calm.

What if it’s a time to question everything: our jobs, careers, relationships, or anything else that doesn’t work for you. Last summer, I met up with a friend of mine I hadn’t seen for at least 6 months. While we were catching up, he announced he had found a new partner and was moving to Romania. What? Where did this come from? He explained that spending every moment of every day of 4 months of lockdown with his partner made him realise they should not be together. He needed a new life.

So he found a new partner. How did he do that so fast when we were all so isolated — or was that just me? And that wasn’t the only big change story I listened to last summer. There were at least two more. So what if we use this time to reflect on our lives and think about what we really want.

I think it’s a good way to use this time. Instead of binge eating, watching Netflix, or worrying yourself stupid after every bad news story, we could be spending some quiet time, just with ourselves and…
