If you sell products, services, or just you, online, it’s important to look through Google’s eyes

With three website domains currently unused, my online business in turmoil after last year, and my presence online in a bit of a pickle, I knew I needed to sort it out. I needed to create a more coherent strategy.

I decided to start with my maths tutoring business. Last year I got no new leads or clients from any online sources — the first time that’s happened. I needed to look at how Google sees me. Because that is how potential clients will see me too. Google can be a major source of new business.

How can you search on Google from a client’s perspective?

I am aware that Google will tailor searches from me in an attempt to provide what it thinks I want to see if I am logged in as me. But incognito mode — available on the chrome browser — allows me to search, well, incognito. This is the closest I can get to pretending I am a potential client.

Searching on ‘maths tutor’, ‘maths tuition’, ‘terry dunn’, and ‘terry andrew dunn’ revealed lots of valuable data. Adding my middle name makes Google think I am a different person and revealed sites where I had to use my full name. A simple distinction, but one I hadn’t realised.
