How important is a good night’s sleep?

Much more important than you might think

When I was younger and had a very busy job, I really didn’t take much notice of sleep. It was just something I did at the day’s end and before another busy workday. Now I realise just how important it is to get a good night’s sleep.

You need to experiment to find your optimal sleep pattern

I have been experimenting with sleep to find out what the optimum amount is for me. I have also realised that not only is this different for each person, but it varies depending on your age too. The prevailing wisdom is that you need more as a teenager and gradually less as you grow older.

But I don’t agree with that logic. There are many factors that influence how much sleep you need, such as the physical or mental activity your body has endured that day, where you sleep, how you sleep, and what your body needs as it’s resting and restoring you to perfect health for the morning.

For me, after some experimentation, I find that I function best after between 7 & 1/2 to 8 hours of good quality sleep every night. I’ve discovered that sleep is when my body swings into action and cleans up, restoring optimal function to every moving part.
