Instead, could this be happening?

Conspiracy theories have been around for a long time now. In fact, if you do a search on Wikipedia you will see they have been around for hundreds of years. So they are nothing new. What is new, are the theories swirling around the coronavirus epidemic. There has been a resurgence.

Common beliefs include that the virus was engineered in a lab in China, that wealthy elites are profiting from the epidemic or that a vaccine will be unsafe. There isn’t and never has been any solid proof either for or against these ideas. It’s down to our opinions and understanding of how the world works. I think they are all unlikely, but you may have a different opinion.

If they are not true, why is this epidemic happening?

I think they are all untrue because the mathematical probability is so low for all of them. If you consider the idea that the virus was engineered in a lab in China, for example. Despite China’s poor human rights record, there isn’t a plausible reason why they would do this. It just seems unlikely.

I think more people are believing them because times of severe hardship, fear, and the horrific scenes in hospitals shown in the media, make us want to find a scapegoat. It’s a ‘who did this to us?’…
